چکیده
a r t i c l e i n f o This paper examines the relationship between US crude oil and stock market prices, using a Markov-Switching vector error-correction model and a monthly data set from 1859 to 2013. The sample covers the entire modern era of the petroleum industry, which typically begins with the first drilled oil well in Titusville, Pennsylvania in 1858. We estimate a two-regime model that divides the sample into high-and low-volatility regimes based on the variance–covariance matrix of the oil and stock prices. We find that the high-volatility regime more frequently exists prior to the Great Depression and after the 1973 oil price shock caused by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. The low-volatility regime occurs more frequently when the oil markets fell largely under the control of the major international oil companies from the end of the Great Depression to the first oil price shock in 1973. Using the National Bureau of Economic research business cycle dates, we also find that the high-volatility regime more likely occurs when the economy experiences a recession.

Non-Linear Relationships Among Oil Price, Gold Price and Stock Market Returns in Iran: A Multivariate Regime-Switching Approach
In this paper, the effects of oil and gold prices on stock market index are investigated. We use a cointegrated vector autoregressive Markov-switching model to examine the nonlinear properties of these three variables during the period of January 2003 - December 2014. The Markov-switching vector-equilibrium-correction model with three regimes representing "deep recession", "mild recession" and ...
متن کاملForecasting Crude Oil prices Volatility and Value at Risk: Single and Switching Regime GARCH Models
Forecasting crude oil price volatility is an important issues in risk management. The historical course of oil price volatility indicates the existence of a cluster pattern. Therefore, GARCH models are used to model and more accurately predict oil price fluctuations. The purpose of this study is to identify the best GARCH model with the best performance in different time horizons. To achieve th...
متن کاملThe Impact of Financial Market Fluctuations on Financial Instability in the Iranian Economy: The Wavelet based Markov Switching Model
In this study, the effect of fluctuations of asset markets (exchange rate, oil price and stock market index) on financial instability index over a period of 1388-1397 monthly is investigated by using the Markov Switching model. The wavelet transform model is used to extract exchange rate fluctuations, oil prices and stock market index. The results show that the effect of exchange rate fluctuati...
متن کاملEstimating Stock Price in Energy Market Including Oil, Gas, and Coal: The Comparison of Linear and Non-Linear Two-State Markov Regime Switching Models
A common method to study the dynamic behavior of macroeconomic variables is using linear time series models; however, they are unable to explain nonlinear behavior of the series. Given the dependency between stock market and derivatives, the behavior of the underlying asset price can be modeled using Markov switching process properties and the economic regime significance. In this paper, a two-...
متن کاملInvestigating the Sustainability of Asian, European and American Regional Gas Markets in Response to Currency and Crude Oil Price Shocks
In this study, we model the long-term and dynamic relationships between spot oil and exchange rates and gas prices by applying the Markov switching vector self-regression model in three regional gas markets in USA, Europe and Asia. Price behavior is analyzed using Bayesian estimation to take into account the transition from an existing relationship and the delayed and recurring effects of pric...
